Sunday, we made the announcement that our own Pastor Derek Robinson is being sent out from Missio Dei to help lead and shepherd Grassroots Church in West Asheville. Below is a video conversation I recently had with Derek.
Pastor Derek has been an integral part of Missio Dei since our inception, and has filled nearly every volunteer and staff position in the church over the last 7 years. For the last 3 years, he has served as our Shepherding Pastor, overseeing Community Groups and handling much of the counseling load. Derek & Michelle have contributed so much in so many ways to the building up of this body that I can say with confidence Missio Dei would not be what it is today without them.
Grassroots is a 2 year-old church plant in West Asheville pastored by my friend, Lance Crawford. Missio Dei has had the privilege of partnering with Grassroots over the last 2 years, both in financially supporting the church, and also in joint events like Christmas Eve & Easter worship gatherings. Pastor Lance has also preached here at Missio Dei on a few occasions, feeding you with the Word in my absence. We love Lance. We love Grassroots. And we love what Jesus is doing in and through them.
Late last year, Pastor Derek began to sense a call toward pioneering a new gospel work. Through much prayer, counsel, and Divine providence, Lance and Derek began talking about what it might look like to partner together. Similarly to the way that our founding pastor Kurt Hannah and I came together to plant Missio Dei, Lance & Derek share a similar vision & philosophy for seeing the gospel impact West Asheville. It is our great joy to be able to send one of our best men to this fledgling congregation in the hopes of seeing God's Kingdom expanded, and disciples made for the glory of God.
It is also sad to say goodbye to a good friend... a brother. The Robinsons have blessed so many of us through their counsel, service, and friendship. We are going to miss Derek, Michelle, and baby Alex deeply. Of course we'll see them from time to time... they'll still be in West Asheville! But it will take some getting used to not seeing them around here all the time. We'll have an official send off in our worship gatherings on November 9th, but here are two things I'd like you to do in the meantime:
1. Pray for Derek & Michelle - it is always hard to say goodbye, even when such an exciting opportunity awaits. Pray for the Robinsons as they build new relationships with the folks at Grassroots and say goodbye to old friends here at Missio Dei.
2. Say Thank You - As you reflect on the impact Derek & Michelle have had in your life and walk with Jesus, write a note, send an email, or just stop them and let them know how they've blessed you. I know it will fill them with joy to see how Christ has used them in this body.
This is the result of the gospel friends. Men & women, raised up, equipped, and sent out for the sake of God's name. Let us celebrate His faithfulness in making disciples who make disciples.
Christ is All,
